A Guide to Building Homes for people with disabilities

Foreword

The scope of this guide is primarily to assist builders of private homes to make them accessible. The access requirements of the Building Code of Australia do not apply to private homes where the Australian Standards are an excellent guide. Councils may be able to provide more information beyond the scope of this guide.

There is no typical design for some features of houses for PWD. The best person to consult is the client. An Occupational Therapist who is familiar with the client can offer useful advice.

If the future needs of the client are unknown, a Universally Designed or Smart House may be the best option.

The preferred sizes given in this guide will become law in a few years time. They are in the process of being legislated.
