Benches and Cupboards

Benches should be 850+/‑ 20mm high. Final height will depend on the user. Edges and exposed corners should be rounded to reduce the risk of injury. Corner units should include a 'Lazy Susan'.

 

Cupboards with sliding doors are preferred by some PWD. They should have 'D' shaped handles that must have 50mm clearance from any other surface.

 

Where hinged doors are used, 'D' handles are preferred but touch latches are also acceptable.

 

For vision ‑ impaired users, horizontal surfaces should be 30% lighter than vertical surfaces.

 

Shelving height should be 230mm -1350mm for wheelchair users and 550mm -1670mm for ambulant people with disabilities.

 

Clothes Hanging Rods should be 1350mm high.
